Having officially launched mainnet in February 2025, Ar.io is a decentralized permanent cloud network built on Arweave’s permaweb. Ar.io provides resilient, censorship-resistant, and permanent access to immutable data, digital identities, and decentralized applications.

Ar.io operates through a globally distributed network of incentivized gateway operators. These gateways support efficient uploading, retrieval, indexing, querying, serving, and verification of data stored on Arweave, addressing performance bottlenecks and reducing reliance on centralized access points.

Ar.io is coordinated through Solana-based protocol programs that manage core network functions such as gateway registration, staking, delegated staking, the Ar.io Name System, observation, and reward distribution. This separates Arweave’s permanent storage layer from the execution layer used for protocol coordination.

A key feature of ar.io is the Ar.io Name System (ArNS). ArNS is a decentralized domain registry enabling users to establish self-owned, human-readable smart domains linked to content, applications, or digital identities stored on Arweave. These names provide user-friendly access to complex Arweave transaction identifiers and can be leased or purchased permanently.

The network’s native ARIO token underpins multiple utility functions designed to incentivize ecosystem participants and maintain network integrity. ARIO tokens are primarily utilized by gateway operators for staking, thereby securing their commitment to network reliability and performance. Token holders can also engage through delegated staking, supporting gateway operators while earning proportional network rewards. Additionally, ARIO tokens facilitate economic activity within the ArNS system. Users leverage ARIO to purchase names, extend leases, increase undername capacity, or permanently acquire ArNS names. This creates a self-sustaining economic loop that rewards gateway operators and supports ongoing network stability and reliability.
